Remote Access
How do we keep running the web site when we’re on holiday? There are some areas, such as e-mail, the blog and the forum, that I can access over the Internet but for anything else this could be a real problem.
The trouble is that, even with access to someone else’s computer, it won’t have all of the files and programs that we use. OK, so we could load everything on to a laptop and lug that around, but there’s an easier, free, solution that allows us to actually use the computer at home from any other computer, even if we’re abroad - as long as it’s switched on and connected to the Internet.
LogMeIn is a solution that is used by many IT support departments and is recommended by many IT magazines for securely accessing your computer over the Internet.
All that is required is to download a small program to your computer and you will then be able to use your computer from any other machine on the Internet via their web site. The set-up really does take only a matter of a couple of minutes, it’s also very good at working with firewalls and routers.
The company, LogMeIn, offers a free program that does all that most of us require. The reason for giving it away is simply to introduce you to their other, more specialised, programs. On signing up you are automatically put onto the ‘Pro’ version for 30 days. This gives a few more capabilities, but nothing that most of us really need. At the end of the trial period the ‘Pro’ version stops working but you simply go to the web site and transfer to the free version.
There are other similar solutions out there but this is reckoned to be the easiest to set up and one of the most secure. I love it!
